Mosquitoes are unique in that they are the only animal capable of infecting humans with malaria, a disease that kills approximately 2000 people per day worldwide (White et al. 2014). Malaria is caused by four protozoan bacteria of the genus Plasmodium and mosquitoes can become infected with the bacteria and then feed on a human, transferring the bacteria. This website showcases the severity of malaria, information on mosquitoes, identifies the type of mosquitoes responsible, how they are able to carry malaria and how humans are trying to manage them. The humble mosquito may be small but it has incredibly large significance to humans and their health.
